Mazda MX-5 Takes On The Forza 7 Budget Supercar Challenge

The Budget Supercar Challenge is back once again on Forza Motorsport 7! In the third episode of the series, Tom Matthews is putting the 1994 Mazda MX-5 – a car requested by a viewer, to the test on the legendary Top Gear Test Track in Dunsfold, England to see if it’s faster than the 2011 McLaren 12C.

The first episode of the Budget Supercar Challenge saw the 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII MR beat the McLaren by almost a second, but last week’s 2011 Peugeot 308 GTi failed the reach the target and fell short of it by achieving a measly 1:16.660. Whether that’s due to the car upgrades chosen or Tom’s driving skill is a decision we’ll leave to you. The time set by the McLaren 12C is 1:13.750 – that’s the overall benchmark for this series, and it remains intact for this week’s episode as the Mazda MX-5 is put to the test.

Tom’s RWD Mazda MX-5 set a stock time of 1:32.418 on the Top Gear Test Track after 6 laps without any upgrades. This is also where Tom takes the opportunity to discuss the benefits of driving a slow car and how you can appreciate and learn the track more. The MX-5 set a respectable time that was just about quicker than the 1:33.141 achieved in the stock variant of the FWD Peugeot. This also means Tom needs to shave off around 20 seconds from his final time once the upgrades have been fitted and installed.

With a budget of 100,000 credits and 25,000 credits already spent on the car, Tom has 75,000 credits to spend on whatever upgrades he desires from the Forza Motorsport 7 Upgrade Shop that he thinks will make his Mazda MX-5 faster than a 2011 McLaren 12C on the Top Gear Test Track. However, will these upgrades make the budget supercar faster than the McLaren, or will the Mazda MX-5 follow in the footsteps of the Peugeot? We won’t spoil that for you, so you’ll need to watch the video for yourself to find out!

Like before, the video integrates both the cockpit camera view and the replay angles in Forza Motorsport 7 – adding to both the difficulty and immersion of the challenge, whilst offering viewers a cinematic look at the action on-track as the upgraded 1994 Mazda MX-5 attempts to beat the time of a McLaren 12C within 6 laps on the Top Gear Test Track.

You’ll also notice his first efforts on the track showcase the Top Gear Test Track in its sunny conditions, whilst the upgraded Mazda run shows the circuit with cloudier conditions due to the ever-changing dynamic skies featured in Forza Motorsport 7.
