Welcome to Palm City, the home of action driving in Need for Speed Heat, the all-new street racer from EA in which the line of the law fades with sunset.
Presented on-stream by Geoff Keighley, EA debuted its official gameplay trailer for Need for Speed Heat during the Gamescom Opening Night Live showcase, revealing its high-octane vehicular action that pits street racers against a rouge police force who aims to take them down.
“Here at Ghost, we’re extremely proud of what we’ve achieved with Need for Speed Heat. When we set out to make this game it was a foundational goal that we not only reconnect with the spirit of NFS and the core features that have made the franchise so successful over the years, but that we also take these features forward and improve upon them,” developer Ghost Games outlined in a statement. “A lot of hard work and passion have gone into making this a reality, and we cannot wait for you to start exploring Palm City and experiencing all it has to offer. Until then, stay tuned for some exciting updates about what to expect when you start hustling by day and risking it all at night in Need for Speed Heat.”
Palm City is described as “a street racer’s paradise and a vibrant metropolitan area made up of many unique districts ready for exploring.” By day, the Speedhunters Showdown features a series of sanctioned races where you can earn Bank from competition-focused Race, Drift and Off-road events. Daytime in Palm City allows you to explore a bright sunny, urban environment where you fill your garage with customizable rides, assemble a crew of like-minded drivers, and test your racing ability in serious competition.
But once the sun goes down, the intensity is taken to a whole new level as Palm City transforms into a neon playground for illicit street racing. At night, there’s no rules, but there is plenty of danger – making this the best way to make a name for yourself. You’ll be forced to risk everything in high-stakes underground races to boost your Rep, defending your place and your status against everyone, including the law. Your Heat level also increases as you break the law. As it gets higher, the cops will try ever so harder to stop you- push it too far, and they won’t hold back. Law low in a hideout spot or return to your garage to bank your earnings and Rep, and to lower your heat level. Just ensure they lose your trail first, otherwise they’ll be ready for you outside.
Cops will fine you if you’re caught driving recklessly during the day, but should you be arrested after sunlight, they’ll take your cash, confiscate any prizes you’ve earned and wipe out your unbanked Rep gains. When encountered during daytime, cops in Palm City are the lawful guardians of the road, playing by the rulebook and nothing more – but their shadier, gritty side is reserved exclusively for night. Once darkness hits Palm City, there’s no such definition of “law.” Police enforcement are predators on the hunt for you, your ride, and your freedom. They’ll stop at nothing to take it all and burn you and your tricked-out ride to the ground. Led by the notorious Lt. Mercer, him and his rogue police force have twisted the concept of law and order – stopping at nothing, without any valid arguments to ride your tail and take you down.
But if you overcome the cops and succeed in events, then you’ll unlock more options in your garage to customize your ride. Winning boosts your crew and increases your notoriety, but it’s important to have a stylish car to show off as you cross the chequered line. Speed Cards from Need for Speed Payback are gone. Instead, bolt on high-performance upgrades or go under the hood and swap out the engine, finely tune the sound of your car exhaust, customize it using bespoke body-parts and then paint your ride with a variety of wild colours and decals. Personalize your character to fit the look and feel of your vehicle, male or female with fresh threads from streetwear clothing brands like Adidas, FLGNTLT and Marcelo Burlon.
Racking up wins in Palm City will see you begin to make a name for yourself, impressing the locals and attracting the attention of individuals itching to join your crew. Build up your team of street drivers and band together to assemble a crew that’ll stick by you through every adrenaline-fuelled challenge the city throws your way. Win events and dominate the underground scene to get the attention of everyone in Palm City.
